The ISO 17442 standard specifies the minimum reference data, which must be supplied for each LEI:

  • The official name of the legal entity as recorded in the official registers.
  • The registered address of that legal entity.
  • The country of formation.
  • The codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions.
  • The date of the first LEI assignment; the date of last update of the LEI information; and the date of expiry, if applicable.

Level 1 Data “ Who is Who”.

The Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) connects to key reference data that provides the information on a legal entity identifiable with an LEI. The Level 1 data explains “ Who is Who”. It provides basic data of entity like

Level 2 Data “ Who owns Whom”

In addition, the LEI data pool includes the ‘Level 2’ data that answers the question of ‘who owns whom’. Specifically, legal entities that have or acquire an LEI report their ‘direct accounting consolidating parent’ as well as their ‘ultimate accounting consolidating parent’.

Connect the corporate dots globally with open, standardized and high quality LEI data.

Distinct procedures apply regarding the publication of information related to direct and ultimate parents with and without an LEI.

  • If the direct and / or ultimate parents of an LEI registrant have obtained an LEI, the LEI of the parent(s) is published together with the LEI record of the child entity. Likewise, the LEI record of an organization that is the direct or ultimate parent of another organization that has obtained an LEI will display the LEI of the child entity or entities.
  • If the direct and / or ultimate parents of an LEI registrant do not have an LEI, the child legal entity is obliged to report reference data on its direct and ultimate parents to the LEI issuing organization. However, in line with applicable policy, the reference data reported by a child entity for its direct and ultimate parents without an LEI is currently not published.

What will happen if LEI is lapsed?

If Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) is lapsed, legal entity will not be able to avail loans from Scheduled Commercial Banks & Insurance companies as per schedule of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA).

Also legal entity will not be able to participate in Money Market, G- Sec Market and Forex Market as per schedule of regulators Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and Others.
